Mark Kirk's surgery to remove section of skull indicates serious event

Mark Kirk suffered a stroke this weekend and is now recovering from surgery. He had driven himself to the hospital "where doctors discovered a carotid artery dissection in the right side of his neck," according to his office.

CHICAGO — Whether Sen. Mark Kirk's recovery from a stroke takes weeks or months, the routine work of his office should continue with little interruption. It's a different story for some high-profile duties, however.

Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL) suffered a stroke over the weekend and is recovering after successful surgery this morning, according to his office.
